Gone are the days of blue-and-red paper glasses and blurry, strangely colored images. There has been a revolution in 3D display technology. Spearheaded by the blockbuster movie Avatar, as well as numerous other 3D films, what was once considered a gimmick is now coming to your living room. However, if you’re interested in watching 3D film at home you’ll need to have specific equipment.

Tossing Your Old HDTV
Displaying 3D content requires special display technology which older HDTVs do not have. In order to watch 3D content you will need to purchase a new HDTV which supports 3D.

Companies are currently rushing new, 3D capable HDTVs to the market, using the label “3D-Ready” to indicate that a set can, in fact, display 3D images. However, it should be noted that the different HDTV manufacturers are using different forms of technology to achieve 3D effects. Also, some older sets (prior to 2010) came out with the 3D-Ready label but are, unfortunately, not actually not compatible with the technology now used to generate 3D images.

Buying a new 3D HDTV is expensive. Most models have pricing starting at over $2000. Of course, these prices will come down over time.

Yes, You Still Need Glasses
While the old blue-and-red glasses are a thing of the past, you still need special glasses in order to view 3D images on your HDTV. These special glasses, which look like sunglasses, are required by every form of modern 3D technology.

The glasses aren’t free, either. While most 3D HDTVs will ship with one or two pairs of glasses, you’ll have to buy additional 3D glasses if you want the entire family to be able to watch at the same time. The glasses are usually around $100 a pair. Also, because the 3D technology used by HDTVs isn’t yet standardized, you’ll need to purchase the glasses from your HDTV manufacturer.

A New Blu Ray, Too
Have a Blu Ray player? Chances are that, in order to display 3D, you’ll need to throw it out and buy a new one. 3D images can only be displayed using a new video format called Multiview Video Coding. If your Blu Ray player doesn’t support it, you won’t be able to view 3D movies.

Don’t throw the Blu Ray out before contacting your Blu Ray manufacturer. There is the possibility that a firmware update will provide this support. However, if no firmware update is released you’re out of luck.

Ready for Prime Time?
As you can see, getting ready for 3D HDTV is complex and expensive. Yet it is also very rewarding. Being able to enjoy 3D movies in your home is a unique and awesome experience which all home theater gurus will quickly fall in love with.

Summary
3D movies are coming to a living room near you. But to watch them, you’ll need special equipment. This article covers what consumers need in order to enjoy 3D movies on their HDTV.

When it comes to buying a projector most people spend considerable time and effort choosing the right one to match their needs and budget. However the screen that it projects onto is often taken for granted or given little thought, even though it plays a significant role in determining how the final image will actually appear.

In some cases the screen is ignored altogether and people will spend thousands on equipment only to project the image onto ‘a perfectly good white wall’.

Some may be slightly disappointed that the home cinema experience, or presentation in church or office, may not quite meet their expectations while others will simply never realize what they are missing.

The screen has two functions, and both are necessary to get the best possible image.

The reproduction of visual information without losing image quality

The distribution of the projected light towards the audience.

Choosing the right screen for the job will result in a better image and a more enjoyable viewing experience. Considering the following points will help in finding the right one.

Screen type

Consider whether a wall mounted, pull-up, tripod, or tabletop screen best suit your needs?

Screen size

The screen should be large enough for the image to be seen, and more importantly for text to be easily read. A good general guide is that the height of the screen should be at least 1/8 of the distance from the screen to the back row of seats.

This is just a guide, however, as other factors may influence screen size. Ceiling height is one, as the distance from the bottom of the screen to the floor should be at least 125cm to avoid obstruction from furniture or other people watching. Another factor is the brightness of the projector. In many cases image quality and brightness can be improved by reducing image size.

Format

For the best results a screen should have the same aspect ratio as the projected image. Most business projectors are designed to work on a 4:3 ratio while those aimed at the home cinema market are 16:9.

Screen Fabric

The choice of screen material depends on the application and where it will be used. Some are designed to work with a projector behind them while others have a surface that amplifies the light reflected off it giving a brighter image. Matt white is by far the most popular surface for front projection screens as, while it does not give the best image, it is the most versatile.

Room configuration and projector

The set-up of the room and position of the projector must be considered. If the wrong screen fabric is chosen, it will not be possible for everyone to read the image. Some screen surfaces, those designed to give brighter images for example, have a narrow angle of view. This means that anyone watching directly in front of it will see perfectly which those at the side of a room may not see a clear image.

Ambient light/projector light output

The effectiveness of the projection screen in distributing light in a specific direction not only influences viewing angle, but also brightness. In a room with a lot of natural light it is advisable to use a projector with a higher light output but the right screen surface can also have a positive effect on the viewed image.

As with projectors, there is not a single product that is ideal in all circumstances. Screens have different characteristics and often compromises have to be made but understanding what the differences are and giving them careful thought is the first step towards better image quality.

What exactly is an HDMI Cable? If you’ve made a purchase for an HDTV, you’ve probably heard of this cable. The HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. This audio/video cable connects an HDTV to a component such as a cable box, satellite TV, a Blu-ray Disc player, or a video game console such as the Xbox, or PlayStation 3. It can also connect a Personal Computer to a monitor or other component. HDMI is basically an interface cable that allows for a digital connection between a device such as an HDTV, for example, and the component or the source, such as a Blu-Ray Disc Player. As with many products, the HDMI comes in various specifications and price ranges. The variables that will differ are the length of the cable, the Version, and the materials made in the construction of the cable.

An HDMI cable can come in a variety of lengths and sizes. The cable length can run from .5m or 1.5 ft in length all the way to 20 m or 66 ft. The longer the cable, the greater chance that the digital quality will decrease if a less expensive, lower grade cable is purchased, this is due to signal attenuation, which is the gradual loss of intensity through a flux (in this case the cable). To ensure the best video and sound quality at any length, the cable that is made of superior materials will provide the purest video and audio possible.

Have you seen a product description of ATC Certified v1.3? What does this stand for in terms of quality? It means that the cable is certified to pass high definition content, in this case, up to 1080p. The Version 1.3 was released in June of 2006. Version 1.3 comes in two Categories. You’ll see “Standard” and “High Speed” on the label. Standard is also known as a Category 1-certified cable and is tested and passed at 74.5 MHz. A Category 2-certified cable is tested and passed at 340 MHz. A higher bandwidth will allow for more capabilities of what can be transmitted over the HDMI cable. Other releases occurred thereafter including the 1.3a, 1.3b, and 1.3c. These all allowed for Deep Color support for digital video and the support of DolbyTrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio streams. This all may sound a little technical, but the previous versions of 1.0 to 1.2 were not made for the superior quality components such as the Blu-Ray Disc players and the higher resolution monitors for the PC. Better producing components require a higher version of cable specifications.

Materials used in the making of the cable also relate to the price of the cable, but more importantly to the quality of the end result in terms of video and audio clarity. The more superior the construction, the higher level of uninterrupted, low interference, pure quality signal. It’s the old adage that you get what you pay for and if you’re going to invest in the latest HDTV, it only makes sense to ensure that the cable structure and quality is equaled.

If you are looking at price and want a clear picture and audio, the lower priced cables will provide a clear picture and a clear sound, but higher priced cables often support resolutions of 720p and 1080i as well an 8 channel digital audio. A higher priced cable will do the same thing as the first one, but they are made of a true shielded twisted pair and gold plated connectors. These affect the purity of sound and video that come from the components. The higher priced cable will provide an excellent video and audio with any component especially a high resolution monitor and/or a Blu-Ray movie experience equal to theater quality picture and sound. They are made of superior materials such as 24 gold plated connectors, high-purity 24 AWG conductors and silver plating on oxygen-free copper conductors. All superior materials used to provide maximum signal transfer and clarity. Once again, the quality of the materials in the cable is what sets these cables apart.

In summary, most HDMI cables that are available these days will provide the connection that you need to have a digital source such as the HDTV connected to a component, such as the PS3. However, you will get a more pure sound and video when you review how the cable is structured based on the quality of the materials used to make the cable and the connectors. A lower priced HDMI cable will do the job, in most cases. The higher priced HDMI cable will no doubt have a better grade of materials, and will provide the better picture and sound with any component connected regardless of the requirements of that component.

Once you get your HDTV Flat Screen home and out of the box you’ll want to set that bad boy up quickly. Knowing ahead of time what the accessory options are prior to your purchase will make your accessorizing painless and prompt. HDTV Flat Screen televisions are not the same old television that dad brought home, plugged in and turned on. The name of the game these days is to accessorize. It’s important to have the proper cables, antenna, surge suppressors and wall mount if you really want to get the most out of your new HD flat screen television.

If you want to put your television up on the wall like you see in restaurants or sports bars, there are wall mounts that can do that. There are basically three different types of wall mounts. They are the swiveling wall mount, the tilting wall mount, and low profile wall mount. Swiveling mounts are the most flexible. They allow the TV to extend out from the wall with the greatest flexibility of the three. The tilting wall mount is good if you plan to put your TV higher up on the wall allowing you to tilt it downward for optimal viewing. The tilting wall mount is also practical if you need to get to the plugs and connectors in the back of the TV. You just tilt it away from the wall. The third mount is the low profile mount which keeps your TV as close to the wall as possible usually only 1 inch away. The low profile wall mount gives the wall and the TV that clean, sophisticated, no dangling cables, how did they do that look.

Another accessory for your HDTV Flat Screen is the antenna. The old “rabbit ears” are a thing of the past. They are now replaced by indoor or outdoor antennas that can mount right on to the wall. The HDTV antenna is sleek and even paint able so it can blend in with your wall. The antenna, which can be a UHF panel array or a Multi Directional HDTV UHF, helps to improve the digital signal and therefore improve the reception for the HD Flat Screen TV.

The latest movies are coming out on Blue Ray discs. In order to get the best picture and sound using a Blue Ray Disc player that’s connected to the HD Flat Screen TV, an HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) cable is recommended. The HDMI audio/video interface will also provide sharper, clearer images when connected to any game console such as the PlayStation3. The HDMI also provides amazing digital surround sound quality. Get the most out of your high definition components by utilizing the HDMI cable.

Now that you made the wise decision to purchase an HD Flat Screen television, don’t you wish you could set it up in your very own Home Theater System? Home theater systems sound complicated and expensive. However, if you realistically break it down, the main components are the TV, the sound system and the AV receiver that connects everything together. Get all your devices organized and linked together and the experience is worth it. A Home Theater Sound System is a perfect accessory to the HD Flat Screen TV, and quite affordable. The sound system includes the speakers, and an AV Receiver. The AV Receiver allows for multiple connections to other components such as a Blue Ray Disc Player, a CD player, a DVD player, an iPod docking station and more. If you have any of these other components, you’re almost there.

The HD Flat Screen television has an incredibly sharp display as compared to the old analog sets from days gone by. The sound quality is equally as important. Get the matching sound quality with audio cables. Use the audio cables to connect the HD Flat Screen TV to an A/V Receiver, a Cable or Satellite box, a DVD player or other components for crystal clear sound. Thin cables allow for exceptional sound, yet are thin enough to hide behind your HD Flat Screen television.

When accessorizing the HD television don’t forget about protecting your investment once you get it home and are ready to install. One strong power spike can ruin your whole day. Get piece of mind by getting a surge suppressor. This small investment for the HD Flat Screen television is something that is often over-looked, but so important in protecting your television from power surges and spikes. These surges and spikes can be harmful to your HD Flat Screen television if plugged directly in to a wall outlet. Provide that barrier and safeguard your valuable investment. The surge suppressors are no longer those long strips that you try to hide along the wall and the baseboard. The surge suppressor for the HD Flat Screen television is conveniently and inconspicuously placed right over the outlet behind your wall mounted television. Nobody knows you are protected except you.

Most HD Flat Screen televisions are often mounted on a wall. That can make for an awkward looking, hospital type feel if not done properly. Add a Flat Screen Picture Frame and the new addition to your wall will blend in with your other decor. The picture frame is an extension of your television. The Flat Panel Picture Frames come in a variety of textures including wood and metal as well as in a variety of colors to match any style of decor. Turn your HD Flat Screen television into a work of art.

What makes any already awesome package even better, the accessories. Whether it’s the shoes, belt and hat on a man or woman, or the wall mount, sound system, and picture frame on an HD Flat Screen television. Enhance your viewing pleasure and experience the true potential of your HD Flat Screen television. These must have accessories add value and outstanding performance that is unmatched from any television you ever watched in the past. Sit down and enjoy the HD Flat Screen television the way it was meant to be, not watched but experienced.

Since they first hit the market some years back, the prices of LCD televisions have been falling quite dramatically. That means that more and more television viewers are considering ditching those large clunky TVs for the sleekness and sexiness of a new LCD TV. With the prices of even the largest LCD televisions falling so sharply there has never been a better time to bring a new LCD TV into your home, but it is important to do your homework and know what to look for before you hit the stores.

Brightness

The brightness is an important consideration for any type of television, but it is even more critical for LCD TVs. If the brightness contrast is not right the colors will not look good – with dark colors looking muddy and dark while lighter portions of the screen look washed out instead of crisp. Since one of the most important advantages of an LCD TV is its superior color quality, it is important to choose a set that will reproduce each color of the rainbow in a faithful manner.

When considering brightness for your new LCD TV it is important to factor in a number of things, including the size of the room where the TV will be placed, its location within the room, the locations of any windows and the distance from the viewer to the television. All of these factors can affect the look of the TV, so it is important to recreate your home environment as much as possible while shopping for your new TV.

The Viewing Angle

Another important consideration for LCD TV shoppers is the viewing angle of the set. When looking at the TV in the store be sure to look at it from all sides. Look at the TV from the sides as well as straight on – that will give you a truer picture of how the TV will look in your home. When looking at the viewing angle keep in mind that depending on where the TV is placed some viewers will be looking at the TV from an angle, and it is important that they be able to see the TV from whatever angle they wish. If the image begins to fade away as you look at the screen from an angle that is a bad sign. It may be best to look for another TV with a better viewing angle.

Choose the Right Connections

These days televisions are used for much more than watching our favorite shows. Modern televisions also double as game consoles, home theatre systems and even computer monitors. If you are buying a new LCD TV it is important to look at the number of connections it has available. Look for not only coax connections for your DVD player but connections for computers, USB devices and more. Also look for the presence of at least one or two HDMI inputs for connecting satellite boxes, Blu-ray DVD players, cable boxes and other such devices.

Thought you had to get an older or used model to find a great HDTV for under $1,000? Not anymore. Today, you can get an HDTV for just under a $1,000, starting with a 40-inch screen and climbing to a whopping 57 inches. Here are some HDTVs that will give you the most for your money, with the highest quality and customer service rankings in their price range.

Best for First-Time HDTV Owners

[DFR::N82E16889187121-10440897-cj|align_right_1]The Panasonic Viera G10 Series gets credit for high customer satisfaction with its TC-P42G10 42-inch screen. At some stores, it you can find it for just under $1,000. This flat-screen HDTV has full 1080p HD resolution. Although its plasma screen accounts for the low price, this Panasonic has the brightest plasma screen available. Exceptionally easy to use, yet having in-depth features for advanced users, this is the perfect HDTV for those looking to buy their first one.

Best for Gamers

The needs of gamers are a little different from those of the average television or movie viewer. Gamers want an HDTV with easy-access HDMI inputs and fast refresh rates. Because a 32″ screen is best for gaming, resolution is not a big problem. The 720p should be plenty. A preset gaming mode is helpful as well. The Sharp Aquos LC32GP3UR fits these needs with a 32-inch screen and three HDMI ports, with a PC input and Ethernet. Inputs are along the side, making them easy to access. The “Vyper Drive” Game Mode is designed to reduce lag time and many say it removes lag problesm altogether. For just under $1,000, no gamer can go wrong with this television.

Best for Computer Lovers

[DFR::4550006-14028-ls|align_right_1]It seems almost too good to believe. You can get an LCD HDTV for under $1,000. The picture is unbeatable and the networking features unmatched. The LG 42LH50 has NetCast for getting on-line content from providers like Vudu, Netflix and YouTube. You can also hook up your USB to watch your own movies on this technologically advanced HDTV.

Best for Home Theater

If you are looking for that movie theater experience, you probably want to get the biggest screen for the best money. This will most likely mean you need to go with plasma or projection (DLP), unless of course you go with an LG. No one else sells a higher quality large screen LCD in this price range. The LG 47LG50 47-inch screen is stunning, with 1080p resolution. As with most LCD screens, the sound could be better, so it is recommended that movie buffs get surround sound stereo with this television.

[DFR::210956343-10387719-cj|align_right_1]If you go to plasma or DLP, you can get even more screen for the money, but be forewarned. To accommodate this monstrous television, you will need at least 10 to 12 feet of space between the viewer and the movie. The Samsung PN50B450 50-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV will give you the true theater experience for well under $1,000. Because you will be sitting far from the television, you will not notice any great difference between this 720p television and one with 1080p.

If you want to get crazy and go for the 57-inch screen, Toshiba is your best bet with the 57HM167 rear projection DLP television. With 1080p resolution, this enormous screen gives you the full movie experience.

The prices of LCD televisions have dropped dramatically in recent years, and that means that these new flat panel TVs are more affordable than ever. Televisions that used to cost several thousand dollars can now be purchased for only a couple hundred dollars, and those lower prices have attracted many more customers.

But even though the prices have fallen so dramatically an LCD TV is still a major purchase, and not one to be taken lightly. Before you bring one of these beauties home it is important to do your homework and learn what to look for in a flat panel television set. Shopping for a flat panel television is quite different from shopping for a traditional CRT set, so it is important to know what to look for.

Placement Considerations

If you currently have a traditional CRT television you may have it in an entertainment center, but chances are your new LCD TV may not fit in your existing entertainment center. LCD TVs are shaped differently, with a longer length and a lower profile, so it is important to measure the space you have available to ensure that the LCD TV you have in mind will fit in the space available.

If you do need to buy a new entertainment center there are specific models designed just for flat panel TVs. These stands are specifically designed to hold flat panel televisions, and some of them can be quite striking. If you plan to hang your new LCD television on the wall be sure to purchase a professional mounting kit – improper mounting and poor quality hardware could cause your new TV to fall and become irreparably damaged. You may also want to consider professional mounting for your new LCD TV just to ensure there are no snags.

Check the Response Time

If you are in the market for a new LCD television one of the most important considerations is the motion response rate. This rate is a measure of the ability of the LCD TV to display fast motion, so it is an essential consideration for those who will be using their new sets to watch sports.

The motion response rate will be expressed in milliseconds, and a quality set should have a response rate of between 4 and 8 milliseconds. If the response rate is not listed in the specifications for the television, be careful – it could be a sign that the response rate is subpar.

Understanding Contrast Ratio

It is also important for LCD TV shoppers to understand a little bit about the contrast ratio of the television. The contrast ratio refers to the degree of variation between the lightest and the darkest parts of the picture. If the set you are looking at has a low contrast ratio the darker parts of the picture may appear gray and muddy, while the lighter portions may look washed out. For best results it is important to look for a set with a high contrast ratio. As with the refresh rate you should be wary of any LCD TV that does not display the contrast ratio in its list of specifications.

Finding the best LCD TV is not always an easy process, but the rewards will be well wroth the effort. Taking the time to learn about the specifications and terms LCD TV manufacturers use will help you find the best set for your money.
